December Presidentís Message

Friends,

Now that weíve all had our bountiful portion ñ hopefully not too bountiful ñ of fixings for the secular Thanksgiving, we turn to preparing for our next feast. Our Chanukah festivities will begin on the first night at 5:00 pm on December 25. It will be an evening of lighting menorahs, music, songs, childrenís dreidal games, grown-up Chanukah quizzes and festive food. Please come with your friends and share the fun. To make your reservation, just complete the form on page 5 and send it in with your check.

Remember that we cannot take for granted that everyone in our community ñ Jews and people of other faiths ñ was able to enjoy Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, there are people who are in need throughout the year. There are many ways to help. The United Way provides services to the entire community. Jews in our community are helped by the Jewish Federation, Jewish Home, Jewish Family Service, Hillel Foundation, Jewish Community Federation, and by synagogues such as ours.

You can help by supporting these organizations directly. You can also contribute to the Jewish Community Federationís annual Super Sunday appeal ñ this year on December 4th. Please volunteer to work the phones and please give a generous contribution. The appeal helps our brethren locally, in Israel and around the world.

We have scheduled a special meeting of the Congregation for December 11th at shul to vote formally on the dues change that was previously announced. You should receive a letter in the mail giving you additional information about the meeting. Please come to voice your opinion.

I look forward to seeing you all at shul.

Harris Honickman

TORAH STUDY

Join friends from BHBI, Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth David for an interesting evening of Torah Study at BHBI at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 1st.  We will be studying Parshat Toldot.

ENJOY AN EVENING OF COMEDY

Join rabbi and comedian David Kilimnick for an evening of rousing comedy and a dessert reception at Congregation Beth Shalom on Saturday evening, December 10th.  Kilimnick (the son of Beth Shalomís Rabbi Kilimnick) is an ordained rabbi in his own right and is also a very popular comic in Israel, who peppers audiences with stories about his misadventures after making aliyah.  He has gotten rave reviews in the Israeli press and will only be performing his ëAliyah Monologuesí once in Rochester.  Tickets are $18 if reserved in advance, $20 at the door.  Call 463-1625 for more information.

CHANUKAH FUN

The JCC is hosting Chanukah Chooplah, a day of fun at the JCC on December 25th from 11 am to 4 pm.  All of the JCCís facilities will be open to the public.  While you are there, do a mitzvah and drop off school supplies to be donated to children in the Rochester City Schools.

So far our TOPS Gift Card fundraiser has been quite successful.  Remember,

TOPS Gift Cards are now available through BHBI in $50 denominations.
