March Presidentís Message

Friends,

Shabbat Beshalach this year was Scout Shabbat.  We read about the deliverance of Israel at the Red Sea and the deliverance of our people, centuries later, under the leadership of the Deborah, from the oppression of the Canaanites.  We saw at our service the reminder that our continued deliverance will come from our children.  Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venturers from at least four local shuls participated, exhibiting leadership skills that will help them and our people succeed and prosper in the future.

The Scouts not only participated in all aspects of the service, but lead it – by leading Musaf, laining Torah and leading readings. Thanks to all who helped including Adult Scout Leaders Aaron Marsh, Bruce and Candi Nelson, Mike Stein, Mike Miller, Howard Ressel, Cindy Miller, Jeff Nidetz and Ray Cherney. A special oneg, sponsored by Jill Clark, was prepared by Aline Honickman and was enjoyed by everyone.  Anne Cherney and Stan Schaffer helped set out the food for the large crowd present.

On Friday night, February 4, we had a special Kabbalat Shabbat service at St. Johnís Home where former BHBI member Betty Glaser lives. Betty has been unable to attend services at BHBI recently – so BHBI came to her. This event was initiated by David Rogachefsky who led a lovely service. There was a great turnout. Thanks to Dave and all who came.

Temple Beth Am has invited BHBI members to participate in their Shabbat Across America dinner on Friday evening, March 3rd.  The dinner will be followed by a joint Friday evening service.  Please get your reservations in soon.

We celebrate another deliverance on March 13 and 14 with the Festival of Purim. We will have a service on Monday evening, March 13th at 7 p.m. with all of our usual Purim shenanigans.

Another special occasion will occur on the evening of March 19 at 6:30 p.m. The Small Conservative Shul Collaborative is sponsoring a lecture by Rabbi Yosef Leiberman – a renowned Torah scholar – about gleanings from the Pesach Haggadah.  See the announcement on page 5 for details. Rabbi Leiberman has been to Rochester previously and Jews from all streams found his presentations so inspiring that he has been invited to return.  There will be no charge to attend, but donations are encouraged. Refreshments will be served.

Letís look forward to spring.

See you all at shul,

Harris Honickman
