August President’s Message

Friends,

As we enter the second half of summer, I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather we’ve had this year. Some of us went to Boy Scout Camp with Troop 3 and had the privilege of catering to the culinary tastes of millions of mosquitoes.

We observe Tisha B’Av from Wednesday evening August 2 through sundown August 3. This is a time of mourning as we recall the destruction of the two Temples in Jerusalem, the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492 and the other tragedies that have befallen our people on this day. Our congregation will again participate in services at Beth David on Erev Tisha B’Av. At 8 pm there will be a discussion led by Bill Gertzog about the Haftorahs of Rebuke and Consolation. Services will follow at 9 pm.

On August 6 we are invited to attend a truly special simcha – the 100th birthday celebration for Rebbetzin Esther Solomon. Mrs. Solomon and the late Rabbi Aaron B. Solomon provided leadership and inspiration during their years of service to BHBI and the Rochester Jewish Community. Please come to the Jewish Home on South Winton Road on Sunday August 6th between 1:30 and 3:30 pm to wish her well and to thank her and her family for their lifetime of service.

The BHBI Annual Picnic will be held on Sunday, August 13 from noon to 6 pm. Please come with your family and friends and bring your appetite. We always have great franks, burgers, corn-on-the-cob, watermelon, cake and more. Our picnic committee can always use more help, so please – volunteer.

See you at shul,

Harris Honickman
