September President’s Message

Friends,

We had lovely weather for our recent annual BHBI summer picnic. The food was great and the company was even better.

Special thanks are due to all who helped make the picnic a success. Leon Metlay purchased the franks & burgers, Andrea Paparocki bought the buns, and Art Mercer got the corn.  Setup & cleanup were done by Art Mercer, Hanni Metlay, Katharine Carney, Yacob Deng, Alana Whalen, Stan Schaffer, Leon Metlay, and Harris, Aline & Matt Honickman.  Chris & Jordan Paprocki, and Matt Honickman manned the grills.  Sweating in the kitchen were Judith Mercer, Steve & Jack Teitel, and Andrea, Chris & Jordan Paprocki.  Food servers included Katharine Carney, Ceil Goldman, Alana Whalen, Jimmy Manucso, Paul & Rose Israel, and Mike Kleine.  Aaron & Jacob Schaffer sold New Year’s greetings.  Hanni Metlay and Harris Honickiman sold food and raffle tickets. (Yes Hanni won the raffle, and I certified it!).  I regret if I left out anyone’s contribution.

Earlier in the month Rebbetzin Esther Solomon had a wonderful 100th birthday party attended by many appreciative and admiring friends from BHBI and the community.  It was wonderful to see such a great turnout of BHBI members.

Recently, Yacob Deng received heartening news that both his parents are alive in Sudan. He will now try to contact them and see how to arrange for their aid.  We are all very happy for him.

Now we begin preparations for the High Holidays. We will host a joint Selichot service with Beth David at an earlier time than what some of you are used to: 8:30 pm on September 16.  Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Friday, September 22 and continues through Sunday.  See the calendar below for service times.  We are pleased that Dr. George Kornfeld will again lead our High Holiday services.

Please tell your friends who are looking for a synagogue to attend on the High Holy Day about BHBI, and ask them to call the synagogue office to arrange to purchase tickets.

At this time of year, we take stock of ourselves and make corrections in the course of our lives. Let us forgive each other our faults and resolve to redouble our efforts to make this world worthy of its Creator.

I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year.

L'shanah Tovah Tekatavu,

Harris Honickman
