October Presidentís Message

Friends,

This is Rosh Hashanah - ìHead of the Yearî.  We say ìheadî not only in the sense of ìbeginningî and ìnewî but also to emphasize the devotion of mind and heart to fulfill that which is required of us during this season and throughout the year – to ask forgiveness from G-d and our fellow man, correct our faults, mend what harm we have caused, search for and share the meaning of life.

During these ìDays of Aweî a timeless way to share this meaning is tzedaka – which is at once righteousness and charity. For Jews they are one and the same. Here are three suggestions.

  1. The Kol Nidre Appeal raises funds for our congregation to provide for the needs of our members and to make necessary repairs to our building.  The congregation relies on your generosity.
  2. Make a donation to ìThe Corners of Our Fieldsî, the High Holy Day appeal that raises funds for MAZON: A Jewish response to hunger. Money and food are raised for distribution to the needy – regardless of religion – through local and national agencies as well as in Israel. Please see information on page 4 of this bulletin for the address where you can send your donation.
  3. Buy Israel Bonds – especially this year. This High Holy Day season Israel Bonds will receive a 50% matching gift for every bond purchased, which can end up being a substantial amount of money. Our brethren in Israel have had enormous losses from the war this past summer and there is much rebuilding to be done. You can help by purchasing a bond by calling 800-752-5653.

Until very recently, Peg Toker has been sending out the yahrzeit reminders to our members. Peg has now giving this very important role to Laura Levinson. We thank Peg for the fine work she did, and for helping Laura transition into the job.

Please help construct and decorate our sukkah on Sunday morning October 1.  That same evening Yom Kippur begins at 6:30 pm with the Kol Nidre service, lead by Dr. George Kornfeld.

Thanks to Aline Honickman, Steve Teitel, Ira Cohen, Leon Metlay and Yacob Deng for their ìGarden Partyî effort to tidy up the landscaping around the building before the holidays. Great job!  Weíll be looking for more members to help with leaf raking in November. Please volunteer.

I wish all our members a sweet, happy and healthy New Year.

L'shanah Tovah Tekatavu,

Harris Honickman
