December President’s Message

Friends,

At this season many – Jews and those of other faiths – take time to give thanks for the bounty we enjoy in this country. Certainly no country has ever offered as much material comfort as ours.

Unfortunately, there are still many who are in need, not just this season, but throughout the year. There are many ways to help.  In the spring, the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts conduct ‘Scouting for Food’ to collect food and clothing for those in need locally.  We also have the United Way to provide services for the greater Rochester area.  The Jewish community is fortunate to have the Jewish Community Federation, Jewish Home, Hillel Community Day School, Jewish Family Service, Hillel Foundation and the JCC.  And on December 3rd, the JCF will have their Super Sunday fundraiser as part of the United Jewish Appeal which supports Jewish organizations and helps the needy in our community, Israel and around the world.  Please give as generously as you can to these Jewish and secular efforts as well to as to our congregation.

We extend sincere thanks to all those who gave their time and energy towards two Sundays of leaf raking in November.  Those who helped were: Chris Paprocki, Andrea Paprocki, Leon Metlay, Ira Cohen, Steve Teitel, Art Mercer, Esther Vogelstein, Harris Honickman and Yacob Deng.

Chanukah arrives on the evening of December 15 and lasts to sundown on December 23.  The shul will have our annual Chanukah party on evening of Sunday, December 17 beginning at 5 p.m.  It will be an evening of lighting menorahs, songs, music, dreidel games, and festive food.  Please bring your menorahs, dreidels, children, friends – and especially your appetite for fun.

See you at shul,

Harris Honickman

Join in the fun!

The BHBI Hanukkah Party is scheduled for Sunday, December 17th.  The fun begins with refreshments at 5 p.m., candle lighting at 5:30, followed by traditional Hanukkah foods and lots of fun.  Don’t forget your candles and your dreydels!!

WELCOME

Although she moved to Rochester several months ago and joined our congregation before the High Holy Days, we want to officially welcome Mrs. Katharine Metlay to our BHBI family.  As most of you know, Mrs. Metlay is Leon’s mother.  She grew up in Canada and lived most of her adult life in Pittsburgh and is a dietician by profession.  Although it was difficult to leave Pittsburgh, she has adjusted well to Rochester and is happy to be closer to her family and to have joined BHBI.  Please welcome her when you meet her.

TORAH STUDY

Join friends from BHBI, Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth David for an interesting evening of Torah Study at BHBI at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13th.

HANUKKAH CANDLELIGHTING INFO

This year, both the first and last night of Hanukkah fall on Friday evening.

Does one light the Hanukkah candles before the Shabbat candles or vice-versa?

Since Shabbat takes precedence over Hanukkah, the Hanukkah candles should be lit first (before the Shabbat candles).  On Saturday evening, after sunset, one does Havdalah before lighting the Hanukkah candles.

So far our TOPS Gift Card fundraiser has been quite successful.  Remember,

TOPS Gift Cards are now available through BHBI in $50 denominations.

To purchase TOPS Gift Cards, contact Stan Schaffer

at 473-8072 or by e-mail at stanschaffer@frontiernet.net
