September President’s Message

Friends,

It was a rootin’ tootin’ (but please on Shabbat no shootin’) weekend August 24, as BHBI was transformed into the K Corral for a western themed Shabbat.  A nice herd of about 30, including several prospective new members, turned out Friday evening for “Barbecue and Borochu”, an outdoor chicken barbecue dinner with all the fixin’s, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat services and dessert.  All agreed the food was great and the atmosphere (literally and spiritually) was as warm as could be.  Many, many, thanks to chef Janet Grable, and to the numerous others who helped with setup, cooking, serving and clean up, including Art Mercer, Jeff Nidetz, Leon Metlay, Harris Honickman, Ira Cohen, and Yacob Deng.  The action continued Saturday with a special celebratory kiddush in honor of all the cow-persons in the Congregation with birthdays or anniversaries in June, July, and August.  The horseshoe challahs impressed, while the cowboy cholent was, without doubt, the best this side of El Paso.  Thanks again to sponsor and chef Janet Grable, with setup and clean up help from Judith Mercer and Emily Fishman.

As summer winds down towards its end, our High Holiday Season starts off with Selichot Services on Saturday September 8.  We will be joined by congregants from Temple Beth David for services at BHBI.  A reception at 8:30 pm precedes the service at 9 pm.  Rosh Hashanah begins with evening services Wednesday, September 12, at 7:15 pm and continues on Thursday and Friday mornings September 13 and 14.  Yom Kippur starts with Kol Nidre on Friday, September 21, at 6:45 pm and concludes with the final shofar blast the next day.  All who have their own shofar are invited to bring it and join in when we blow the shofar to end the fast on Saturday at 7:54 pm.  Once again BHBI has holiday tickets available for non-members at a very reasonable charge.  Please tell any family, friends, or visitors who are looking for a small, warm, congregation in which to welcome the New Year to call or email for details.  Our High Holiday Services will be lead again this year by Dr. George Kornfeld.  See the schedule below for a complete listing of holiday services and times.

September will be a busy month!  Immediately following Yom Kippur we will meet Sunday morning, September 23, to put up the shul sukkah.  Everyone is invited (and encouraged) to help out.  Sukkot services will be held on Wednesday evening, September 26 and Thursday morning September 27, followed by Shmini Azeret services with Yizkor on Thursday morning October 4.  Our holiday services conclude with our Simchat Torah celebration that evening, October 4, at 7:30 pm.  Please come and don’t forget your dancing shoes!

It is with deep sorrow that I inform you of the passing of Tanya Yudelson, the wife of Joe Yudelson and the mother of Aline Honickman.  All who enter our sanctuary are sure to notice the beautiful window curtains that Tanya made only recently for us.  Our condolences go to the Yudelson and Honickman families.  May the Lord comfort the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

At this holiday season I ask that we reflect, forgive each other our faults, and start anew to work together to strengthen our congregation.  At BHBI, everyone is important and is needed.

I wish you and your loved ones a good and sweet New Year.

L’shanah tovah,

Steve Teitel
