October Presidentís Message

Friends,

I hope the start of the New Year finds you well and happy.  Our sincere thanks go to all those who participated in and helped prepare for our holiday services.  We particularly thank the Honickman family for sponsoring the lovely break-fast at the shul following the conclusion of Yom Kippur services.  As we start the New Year, the biggest challenge facing BHBI continues to be increasing our membership base.  I therefore once again urge you to let your friends and relatives know about the warm and informal atmosphere we have at BHBI, and encourage them to pay us a visit.

If the story of my great-grandfather, which I related in my Annual High Holiday Appeal message, sufficiently intrigued any of you that you now wish to try and track down your own family history, I would recommend the following internet sites to start:

Ellis Island searchable records:                                     http://www.ellisislandrecords.org/

JewishGen: The Home of Jewish Genealogy:               http://www.jewishgen.org/

JewishGen: ShtetLinks:                                                http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/

JewishGen: Yizkor Book Project:                                 http://www.jewishgen.org/Yizkor/

Following the High Holidays we had little time to rest as our dedicated sukkah building crew returned to erect the shul sukkah on the Sunday following Yom Kippur.  Check the ìPicsî section of our shul website to see the action.  Thanks to Leon Metlay for supplying breakfast to those who came out to help.  Sukkot services on Thursday were followed by a delicious stuffed cabbage kiddush sponsored and prepared by Janet Grable.  Many thanks Janet!  Our holiday season will conclude on Thursday, October 4, with Shmini Azeret morning service starting at 9 am, followed by yizkor, and then Simchat Torah evening service at 7:30 pm.  Be sure to come and join in the fun Thursday evening!

Next month will see a very special occasion for my family when our son Jack becomes a bar mitzvah, Saturday morning, November 10.  My wife and I ask you to save the date and come celebrate with us.  A special kiddush will follow the service, to which all are welcome.  Saturday night at 6 pm there will be a dinner dance party at the shul for Jackís family and friends.  All congregants who wish to share in our simcha are invited to the party, but we must ask you to call us (472-6331) by Sunday, October 21, so that we know how many are coming.

The Hobels would like their friends to know that they have moved.  Ben is now residing at Heather Heights in Pittsford, while Muriel is continuing rehabilitation therapy at the Highlands of Brighton.  We hope that she will join Ben soon, and we wish them a mazel tov on their 59th wedding anniversary that was last month.  We also thank them for a very generous donation of groceries.  The Finkelmans have now moved into the Jewish Home, where Simon continues a slow recovery after a stroke.  Laura Levinson had heart valve replacement surgery just after Rosh Hashanah.  She is now back home and doing very well.  Peg Toker had stomach surgery just after Yom Kippur.  The operation went well and she hopes to be back home soon.  We wish them all a speedy and complete recovery.

See you in shul,

Steve Teitel
