May President’s Message

Friends,

I hope you all had a pleasant Pesach and that your digestive system is returning to normal!

Several important events will take place this May.  Our Annual Members Meeting will take place on Sunday, May 18, 7:00 pm at BHBI. At this meeting we will approve our upcoming year's budget and vote in our Congregational Officers and Trustees for a new term.  It is also your opportunity to voice any concerns or comments you may have about the state of our Congregation.  If you are unable to attend, please send your proxy with another member.  A member may hold up to two proxies, however only attending members can could towards a quorum, so do please make every effort to attend personally.  Members must be in good standing in order to vote.

The prior week, on Saturday May 10, we will have a Special Kiddush following morning services to celebrate all members with a Birthday or Anniversary that has occurred during the months of December through May.  So if you have had a special occasion during those months, or even if not, please be sure to turn out!  The kiddush is sponsored by Janet Grable and a great time is guaranteed!  See your invitation elsewhere in this bulletin.

The following day, May 11, BHBI will participate in the Israel@60 Parade, in honor of the State of Israel's 60th Anniversary.  The parade route will run along East Avenue, starting at Culver Road and ending at the Federation Building, a total distance about one mile.  The parade will start at 1:30 pm, and we'd like as many BHBI members to participate as possible!  BHBI will line up on Oliver Street, near the corner with East Avenue, by 1:15 pm.  So put on your bright yellow BHBI tee-shirt, show your BHBI spirit, and come join the parade! (some BHBI tee-shirts may still be available for a mere $18 donation to the shul – call the shul office for details.)  A street fair, with kosher food court, will be held from noon until 5 pm on the grounds of the Federation.  Following the parade, at 3 pm, there will be a free concert by the internationally renowned Israeli world music group, The Idan Raichel Project.  The concert will take place on a special stage on East Avenue, between Alexander Street and Sibley Place.  Further details are available on the Federation's website.  So please come out for this very special event (and don't forget to bring Mom)!

It is with very deep sadness that I inform you of the passing of Simon Finkelman, a long time member of the Congregation and of our Board.  A truly sweet man with a warm and lively sense of humor, Simon will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to know him.

See you in shul,

Steve Teitel

A Message from Herb Spencer

Hello - this is Herb Spencer, the friendly person who is now sending out the BHBI yahrzeit notices.  I have just finished putting all the data into a computerized system.  When all the information was turned over to me, it was
on handwritten index cards.  Therefore I had to trust the data and in some cases I had to decipher handwriting.  I also used hebcal.com, the Jewish calendar system, to do my checking.  I have made a notation if your loved one has a memorial plaque in shul and I have indicated which board and column it is on.  I have also determined yahrzeit dates several years ahead so, if I get fired from this job, my successor can do this easily for several years.  If I have mis-spelled anyone's name, or if you think I have the wrong date or have made another error, PLEASE let me know.  Also if you no longer wish to receive a reminder of your loved one’s yahrzeit, let me know and I will remove it.  If you expect to get a yahrzeit notice but have not received it, the same thing applies.  All I ask is that you keep in touch.  I can be reached at (585) 334-7493 or by e-mail at hspence1@rochester.rr.com.

TORAH STUDY

Join friends from BHBI, Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth David for an interesting evening of Torah Study at BHBI at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14th.  Come and enjoy interesting conversation and make new friends while gaining new insights into Torah!  All are welcome.

DO YOU HAVE FRIENDS WHO ARE UNAFFILIATED?

Tell them about BHBI and let them know that BHBI is Rochester’s friendliest shul!  Then invite them to attend our services – they will be sure to get a wonderful welcome.  We would also be happy to add them to our bulletin distribution list.

MEMORIAL PLAQUES

Memorialize a friend or loved one by purchasing a BHBI memorial plaque.  For more information, contact Stan Schaffer at 473-8072 or stanschaffer@frontiernet.net

The next time that you want to buy something from Amazon.com go to the BHBI web page at www.BHBIRochester.org and click on the Amazon.com link.  Each time you make a purchase after linking to Amazon.com from our web page, BHBI gets a percentage of the purchase.  Buy gifts or something for yourself or your family and support BHBI at the same time!!

PLEASE VISIT OR CALL OUR ELDERLY MEMBERS!

Many of our elderly members are no longer able to come to shul and would love to hear from their BHBI friends.  Please call or visit them.  Among them is Maxine Gold who has recently moved to the Jewish Home.  If you have an opportunity to visit her there, please do so.

Take, on the tenth day of May,
A Shabbat rest from all of your chores,
As we celebrate six months o’ birthdays --
Perhaps, my friend, even yours!

Come to BHBI for the party,
Where, first, we’ll daven with nusach.
But, please, try not to be tardy
Or you’ll walk in in the middle of Musaf.

There’ll be plenty of fine party fare
Loaded high on every table
‘Cause if I didn’t over-prepare,
Well -- I just wouldn’t be Janet Grable!

This won’t be Seussical the Musical;
That’s been already produced.
This, to tell you the truthical,
Will be BHBI’s Seuss, the Keedoosh!

Come join us as we celebrate six months o’ birthdays and anniversaries (December-May) on Shabbat morning, May 10th.  (No other invitations will be issued.)  Hope to see you all there.

EVENTS IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY

Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Memorial Day) Commemoration on Thursday, May 1st

The annual Yom Hashoah Holocaust remembrance service will be held in the JCC's auditorium on Thursday, May 1 at 7pm. This year's theme is "Defying the Odds with Extraordinary Courage: Survivor Legacies and Contributions."
Shalom Yoran, a Holocaust survivor and partisan, will be the featured speaker. Rabbi Laurence Kotok will deliver the Rabbi's message and six survivors along with first and second generation descendents of survivors will light the six memorial candles. Hazzan Martin Leubitz will chant the appropriate prayers and the Temple Sinai Sason Youth Choir will lead the Partisan Hymn as well as the Star Spangled Banner and Hatikvah. Rabbi Shaya Kilimnick will recite the prayer for peace.

Yom Hazikaron (Israel Memorial Day) Commemoration on Sunday morning, May 11th

The commemoration begins at 10:30 AM with a program by local religious schools and Hillel Community Day School at Temple Beth El.

Israel@60 on Sunday, May 11th

The day kicks off with an Israeli street fair and kosher food court beginning at 12 noon (until 5 PM) on the grounds of the Jewish Community Federation, 441 East Avenue. At 1:30 PM, 50 local organizations, Mayor Robert Duffy, County Executive Maggie Brooks and other dignitaries, countless synagogues (including BHBI) and youth groups, floats, stilt walkers, brass bands and more, will start marching from Culver Road toward Alexander Street. And at 3 PM, the culminating event takes place when the Idan Raichel Project, a world music group featuring the headliner and an 8-piece band of Ethiopian/Israeli musicians, plays for free on a stage built specially for the occasion on East Avenue between Alexander and Sibley Place.

YAHRZEITS

At the following Shabbat Services, we will read the names of our late loved ones whose Yahrzeits will occur on that Shabbat or during the following week.
