July Presidentís Message

Friends,

At BHBI we pride ourselves on the warm welcome we give to any and all visitors who come to join us for a Shabbat service.  But a Cat in a Hat?  A Fox in Sox?  These and many others joined us last May 10th for "Seuss the Keedoosh," sponsored and prepared by Janet Grable.  We got to meet all these characters while comparing the classic Dr. Seuss stories as presented in both English and Hebrew, all the while enjoying a delicious kiddush lunch (yes, with plenty of green eggs, but of course no ham).  Pictures are now on our shul website – just go to www.BHBIRocheser.org and click on the "Pics" link.  Many thanks to Janet for the wonderful kiddush!

Our Shavuot dinner was a big success, with over 30 members and friends coming out to share a delicious dinner of lentil soup, salad, filo-wrapped salmon and cheese kugel.  Thanks to Leon Metlay who chaired the dinner committee and helped with shopping and setup, to Judith Mercer and Emily Fishman who helped me in the kitchen and with setup, and to Janet Grable for the fantastic 10 Commandments cake and other desserts.  Thanks also to all the others who helped serve and clean up.

This coming July 18th and19th, BHBI will launch a very special series: The Simon Finkelman Memorial Shabbaton.  As most of you know, Simon was an active participant in our weekly Shabbat services and was very fond of a good D'var Torah, giving many of them himself.  The Board thus felt it would be a most fitting way to honor Simon's memory by establishing a lecture series and inviting an outside speaker to address the Congregation on a Shabbat weekend.  To initiate this series, which we hope will continue as an annual event, we are very pleased to have as our guest Rabbi Shamai Kanter.  Rabbi Kanter is well known in the Rochester community, having served as Senior Rabbi at Temple Beth El for over 20 years until his retirement in 1997.  Rabbi Kanter will join us for Shabbat Evening Services at 8 pm, Friday, July 18, where he will deliver a D'var Torah on Parahat Pinchas.  The following day, Saturday July 19th, after Shabbat Morning Services starting at 9:30 am, we will have a kiddush luncheon at noon, followed at 1 pm by the Simon Finkelman Memorial Lecture where Rabbi Kanter will address the Congregation on "My Favorite Political Prayer."  These events are open to the public, so please help spread the word and invite your friends and relatives to attend.  It is sure to be a stimulating and engaging weekend.

In conjunction with the Finkelman Memorial Shabbaton, we will be hosting Rabbi Kanter at the shul for a Shabbat Evening dinner on July 18th at 6:30 pm.  All BHBI members and friends are invited to attend.  Please see the notice on Page 4 of this bulletin for details and the reservation form.  We must ask that you get your reservations in to the shul office (244-2060 or BHBI@frontiernet.net) no later than Monday morning, July 14.  We will unfortunately not be able to accept late reservations.

See you in shul,

Steve Teitel
