October President’s Message

Friends,

As this message reaches you, our High Holy Days have gotten underway.  Our Selichot service, held jointly with Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth David, was a nice prelude.  We viewed the movie "Paper Clips" which was well received by all.  Thanks to Leon Metlay for his work in organizing BHBI's participation in this joint service.

Yom Kippur will soon be upon us.  The Kol Nidre service is set for Wednesday, Oct. 8th at 6:15 pm, with morning services including Yizkor on Thursday, beginning at 9 am.  The Ne’ilah Service will be at 5:45 pm, with the final Shofar blast ending our Days of Awe at 7:20 pm.  As in past years, everyone is invited to bring their own shofar to services and to join in for that final blast!  We are grateful to the Honickman family who will again sponsor a break-fast at the shul following the conclusion of Yom Kippur services.

When the High Holy Days conclude, there will be no time to rest!   We move right on into the last of the three regalim: Sukkot.  Please join us Sunday, Oct. 12th, at 11 am in the BHBI parking lot as we meet to erect our shul sukkah.  Erev Sukkot services will be on Monday, Oct. 13th at 7 pm, with Sukkot 1st day services following on Tuesday at 9 am.  We conclude our holiday season with Shmini Azeret morning services, including Yizkor, on Tuesday, Oct. 21st at 9 am, followed by our joyful Simchat Torah evening service that night at 7:30 pm.

Please be sure to tell your friends and acquaintances of our new FREE 3-month trial membership!  What better time than the holidays to see what BHBI has to offer?  (Offer available to new 1st time prospective members only.)

Our annual Friday night barbecue on Sept. 5th was a great success!  My very sincere thanks to Judith Mercer who spent long hours helping in the kitchen, to Janet Grable who made the desserts, to Leon Metlay who did the shopping, and to Helen Gulack and others who helped with set-up and clean-up.

With one shul dinner over, it is time for the next!  Please mark your calendar for Sunday, October 19th, 6 pm, when we will have dinner in the sukkah (weather permitting).  This will be a special benefit dinner for our caretaker, Lual (formerly known as Yacob).  As many of you know, Lual came to the U.S. as a refugee from the fighting in the Sudan when he was a young boy.  It was only relatively recently that he learned that his parents and many other family members survived the fighting and remain in the Sudan.  At the end of October, Lual will be making his first return trip to the Sudan to be reunited with his family.  Our special dinner will therefore be to wish Lual a safe trip and a safe return, and to help him with the considerable expenses involved.  Food is being donated by a member and we ask for the same minimum contribution as for other shul dinners: $10 per adult, $6 per child under 12, with a $36 family maximum.  All proceeds from the dinner will be given to Lual in the form of a bonus.  Any contributions over the minimum amount are tax deductible.  Please send your reservations and check (made out to BHBI) to the shul by Monday, October 13th, so that we can give Lual his bonus before he leaves on his trip.  Friends are invited!

See you in shul,

Steve Teitel

May You Be Inscribed for a Good Year

COME TO THE DINNER IN THE SUKKAH ON OCTOBER 19TH TO HONOR OUR CARETAKER, LUAL, PRIOR TO HIS TRIP TO SUDAN

As many of you know, our caretaker, Lual (who has also been known to us as Yacob), is one of the ‘Lost Boys’ who escaped the violence in his native Sudan as a child and eventually was brought to the United States to start a new life.  Happily, his parents are still alive in Sudan and he will be returning there soon to visit them for the first time in many years.  We are planning a parve Italian dinner in the Sukkah (weather permitting) on Sunday, October 19th at 6 pm to honor him before his trip and are collecting donations to provide him with a special ‘bonus’ to be used for his trip.

Minimum donations for those attending the dinner - $10 per adult; $6 per child under age 12 (all donations above this amount are tax deductible).  You may donate even if you cannot attend the dinner.

Number of People Attending the Dinner:   ________ Adults     ________ Children Under 12

Names: __________________________________________________________

Please send your reservation form and check made out to BHBI, 1369 East Ave., Rochester, NY 14610, to be received no later than October 13th.
