President’s Message Friends, Our holiday season has
now at last concluded. I would
like to thank Dr. George Kornfeld for once again leading our High Holiday
services, and to Harris Honickman and Leon Metlay of our ritual committee for
their great job organizing it all.
Thanks also to all who participated on the bimah or with readings. Our lovely new holiday bimah cover,
generously donated by Joe Yudelson in memory of his late wife Tanya,
zichronah l'brachah, enhanced the beauty of our services. Thanks to the Honickman family for
once again sponsoring the break-fast at the shul at the conclusion of Yom
Kippur. Many thanks to Janet
Grable for the wonderful kiddushim she sponsored and prepared from Sukkot
through Simchat Torah. I don't
think there is a better fed congregation in town! Our special Sukkot
dinner in honor of our caretaker Lual was a great success. Over 30 people turned out to wish
Lual a safe and joyful journey as he makes his first return visit to the
Sudan to see his family, from whom he has been separated for many years. I would like to express my very
sincere appreciation to all those who came to the dinner and all those who
made contributions. The proceeds
from this event amounted to a nice bonus that we presented to Lual to assist
him with the expenses of his trip.
I would also like to thank Judith Mercer and Emily Fishman for helping
out in the kitchen, and Aline Honickman for help setting up. Lual will depart on his trip October
29. During Lual's three month
absence his duties will be taken up by his friend William, also from the
Sudan. Please stop by to say
hello and introduce yourself to William. Although the holidays
have now passed, our special three-month free membership offer, for
prospective first time new members, continues! Please tell anyone you know who is unaffiliated, or who is
shul shopping, about this great opportunity to see what BHBI has to
offer. Our warm, member-led,
Shabbat services allow for a level of participation and engagement that one
just will not find in larger congregations. I wish to bring your
attention to a new BHBI tradition that has begun over the last few
months. On the third Friday of
each month we now hold Shabbat evening services at Heather Heights, an
assisted living community in Pittsford located at 160 W. Jefferson Road
between Clover and Main Streets.
Heather Heights is the home of long time BHBI members Ben and Muriel
Hobel. Ben and Muriel, and the
many other Jewish residents, greatly appreciate being able to attend our
traditional Shabbat services, and we have had a nice minyan each time. Services at Heather Heights begin at
7 pm, so please come on out! As this bulletin
reaches you, we are right in the middle of the annual Rochester Jewish Book
Festival. Please check out the RJBF
website at http://www.rjbf.org for a schedule of the events and support the festival! See you in shul,
Steve
