July President’s Message

Friends,

I was president of BHBI about 20 years ago. Luckily for you all, I can’t find the diskettes on which are stored my President’s Messages from that era. So, despite my desire to be “green”, you won’t be subjected to recycled messages. It’s just as well, though, because the issues which faced our shul 20 years ago are somewhat different. Certainly, the hot-button issue of whether women should be counted in the minyan and allowed to lead services has been resolved. Other issues, such as the difficulty of getting a minyan on Friday nights and occasionally on Saturday mornings were the same. Our aging building presented challenges back then as well. Our shrinking and aging population has become much more an issue in recent years.

One of the tragedies of that era was the dissolution of our cooperative Hebrew school with Temple Beth Am. Beth Am went on to have their own school for many years, while we sent our children first to Beth David, and subsequently to Beth El. The lack of our own school, or of a significant voice in the school to which we sent our children, has probably hurt us in the long run. Now, 20 years later, both we and Beth Am are faced with similar problems: small size, difficulty with minyans, difficulties with our buildings, a small cadre of people who are doing most of the work and burning out. One solution to at least some of these problems has been joint activities. We have done joint Yizkor services with Beth Am for several years now, with a cessation of the worry about getting a minyan for Yizkor. Joint Shabbat services twice a month have also been successful. During the coming year, we will be discussing additional joint activities with Beth Am. Among things in the works is the addition of Temple Beth Am to our joint Tisha B’Av service with Temple Beth David. We also plan to publish a joint Yizkor book with Beth Am for use during the Yizkor services of the coming year. You will be contacted in August about listing names of loved ones in the book. Finally, we are planning a joint picnic to be held at Temple Beth Am on August 7th, the Friday evening of our August joint service. See details elsewhere in this bulletin. This picnic provides an opportunity for those of us who haven’t been to joint services before to get to know their members, and vice versa. I urge you to attend.

Summer is a time of travel and vacations. I wish you all safe and happy times. It is also a time when “regulars” may not be in town for services. If you are in town, please come and help us have a minyan. If you have guests, please bring them along. We’ve gotten many compliments over the years from out-of-towners who have enjoyed our services. Have a great summer!

B’shalom,

Leon Metlay
