September President’s Message

Friends,

In my previous message to you, I announced a special congregational meeting to discuss hiring Rabbi Geoffrey Goldberg. It is with great pleasure that I announce that we have a Rabbi. We will be sharing Rabbi Goldberg’s services with Temple Beth Am. We anticipate that he will officiate at sixteen joint TBA-BHBI services during the coming year. He will also be available as our halachic authority and will be available to answer the spiritual needs of our congregation. The first service he will be leading will be at Temple Beth Am on September 5th at 10 AM. Please join us there.

Many of you met Rabbi Goldberg while he was the interim Rabbi at Temple Beth David. He comes from England, where he where he was ordained at Leo Baeck College. He is a cantor as well, with a doctorate in Jewish Musicology from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. We will have an additional chance to learn from him because we have invited Rabbi Goldberg to give the Finkelman Lecture this fall, after the holidays.

Beth Am and BHBI are each establishing a “Rabbi Goldberg Fund”. Contributions to the funds will pay for additional services from the Rabbi, beyond the originally projected sixteen.

Temple Beth Am and Congregation Beth Hamedresh Beth Israel will also publish a Yizkor Book together this year. We have shared morning Yizkor services with Beth Am for several years and this year we are cooperating in the production of a Yizkor booklet which will contain the names of our late loved ones. The order form is included in the bulletin. Please note that the form is to be returned to the publisher, not to our congregation.

We have come one step closer to the possibility of handicapped access to our building. On August 5th, Steve Teitel and I appeared before the Historical Preservation Board. They denied our proposal for a ramp, but approved our proposal for an outside elevator. The next step will be to get approval from New York State. You’ll be hearing more about this, I hope, after the holidays.

The High Holy days are almost upon us. Our services this year will again be led by Dr. George Kornfeld. During the coming weeks our Ritual Committee will be contacting our members about honors. In anticipation of the High Holy Days, we are going to have our Barbecue and Borochu Picnic once again on Friday, September 4th at 6 P.M. We will have Israeli style BBQ with some kosher hots for anyone who wants less exotic fare. Please call in your reservations to the BHBI office at 244-2060 – The event costs $10 for adults, $6 for kids under 13 with a $36 family maximum. Remember - Prospective new members eat for free, so invite your unaffiliated friends to attend and also let them know that we are offering a free 3-month trial membership which includes High Holy Day tickets.

I look forward to seeing you in shul,

Leon Metlay

EVENTS IN THE JEWISH COMMUNITY

One People, One Heart: An Evening with Karnit Goldwasser

The Opening Event to the 2010 UJA Federation Campaign
Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at 6:00 PM
Rochester Riverside Convention Center

It was the last day of Udi Goldwassers army reserve duty and his wife Karnit was preparing his favorite meal. Then she heard there was trouble near his base. By evening, the planned celebration turned into a nightmare as she learned that her husband had been kidnapped, along with soldier Eldad Regev, by Hizbollah terrorists near the Israeli border with Lebanon. She grasped for hope. “I only want to see my soulmate, the love of my life again.”  It would take two years and appeals to government members, business leaders, human rights organizations and power brokers – even to Iran’s president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – to get Udi and Eldad home, and tragically their families received only their remains.  Hear the story of a young newlywed who achieved heroic status in her unwavering fight on behalf of her husband… and how the global Jewish community rallied for her cause.

Those in attendance will have the opportunity to privately make their commitment to the 2010 UJA Federation Campaign. A minimum gift of $500 is suggested.  For reservations call 585-461-0490.
