President’s Message Friends, We've had
an active August with some repairs to the shul (thanks to Steve for painting
the steps), Jacob Schaffer's bar mitzvah (Mazel tov!), and Steve's Chinese
picnic (yum!). Next come the High Holy Days. On September 4th at 8:45 PM at Beth Am we have
a showing of the Israeli movie Ushpizzin followed by a discussion and
Selichot service. Then, on the evening of September 8th, Rosh Hashanah starts. This
year we will again welcome Dr. George Kornfeld as our cantor. Following
Yom Kippur, the holiday season continues with the festival of Sukkot. Come
join us in the sukkah. This year, Sukkot is enlivened by Noah Honickman's Bar
Mitzvah on September 25th.
Please join us for the celebration! Leon Metlay |

May you be
inscribed for a good year.

FROM THE RABBI’S DESK By RABBI GEOFFREY GOLDBERG September 2010 |
|
The
Conservative Movement worldwide has recently brought out two new prayer books
of remarkable quality. The first is newly edition of Siddur Va’ani
Tefillati of the Israeli Masorti Movement. The siddur’s sub-title is: Siddur Yisre’eili, “An
Israeli Siddur.” Perhaps on another occasion I will tell you more
about it. Compact and beautifully presented, this siddur has been
prepared (and marketed) not only with the davenning public in mind,
but also with that large sector of the Israeli population who know little
about Judaism and Jewish prayer, but who are open to engagement with the masoret,
the Jewish religious tradition, or who seek Jewish spiritual enrichment in
their live. The
second prayer book is the Rabbinical Assembly’s Maḥzor Lev Shalem for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I cannot possibly begin to give
justice to this magnificent publication, but it seems to me to take
Conservative liturgy to a new level. While it embraces much of the masoret
that the davenner is familiar with it also understands, like Siddur
Va’ani Tefillati, that a prayer book needs to address the needs of those
for whom the structure and content of the prayer book is unfamiliar or
perplexing. It understands that the words of the prayers are only the beginning
in prayer: they help us enter another level of awareness of seeing reality
and seeing ourselves. It assumes that the worshipper today has difficulties
with much of the language of traditional liturgy. What do we mean, for
example, when we speak of God as “Avinu”? What do we mean when we call
God “malkeinu”? To address these questions and struggles Maḥzor Lev Shalem has provided explanations, commentaries and reflections on the
margins of every page. Commentaries and explanations also accompany the Torah
readings and the Haftarot. The basic theme of each prayer or piyyut
(poem) is as well as the beautiful structures of the latter. In addition one
is guided gently through the choreography of the services. The
finest of liturgical poetry, often of a deeply introspective and personal
character, from outside the Ashkenazic tradition has also been included. Here
is one example, written by Solomon ibn Gabirol (Spain, 11th
century) found in other non-Ashkenazic liturgies, but included in Maḥzor Lev Shalem in the preface to the Ma‛ariv Service of Rosh Hashanah. Mighty God who listens to the poor and hears their
prayer; How long will You be distant and hidden from me? Night and day I turn, calling out with a true heart, always thanking You, for Your kindness is so great. My sovereign, my hope is in You; my heart trust in
You, as dreamer of dreams depends on an interpreter. This I ask: hear my prayer. This I seek—not more, not less. The
Hebrew of the latter line, otah avakeish, lo fahot ve-lo yoteir, has a
refreshing powerful directness, as direct as the living street Hebrew of
Israel today. It speaks with an urgency which is the very essence of Yamim
Nora’im. The
name of this remarkable maḥzor, Lev Shalem, is based on the verse, ve-hithalakhti
lefanekha be-emet uve-leiv shaleim, “I have walked before You sincerely
and wholeheartedly” (Isaiah 38:3). The Even Shoshan Hebrew Dictionary
prefaces the biblical source with the explanation: in truth (be-emet),
with wholeness (uve-tamim), with integrity (be-yosher) and
trustworthiness (uv-ne’emanut). I look forward to the time when it
will be possible to davven with Maḥzor Lev Shalem to fulfill the aim of the Yamim Nora’im: to be whole with
ourselves, with others, and with God. L’shanah
tovah, Rabbi
