President’s Message Friends: What I’m about to say
is going to upset some of you. I hope it does. I also hope it will motivate
you to take action. What do you do on
Friday nights? Do you light candles? Bless the challah? Jewish tradition
fosters family togetherness as we go through the familiar rituals. Part of
the Friday night tradition is Kabbalat Shabbat, the prayers for greeting the
Sabbath. It’s not a long service but it’s a wonderful way to get into the
Sabbath mood. Judging from our turnout on Friday nights, those of you who say
Kabbalat Shabbat do it somewhere else. I was recently looking
back through some old BHBI bulletins, going back to when I was president 20
years ago. One of the things I wrote about back then was the problem getting
a minyan on Friday night. Since then we’ve experimented with different times,
without notable success. At this point I can propose changing the time of the
service without worrying about inconveniencing the regular attendees. There
are so few. More of our members attend the monthly services at Heather
Heights than any others. On our last joint Friday night service at Beth Am,
none of our members attended. I anticipate that for the October 29th
Friday night joint service at BHBI, there will be more Beth Am members than
BHBI members. What can we do? Is 8 PM
too early? Too late? Should we go back to having a 6 PM service so that
people can go home to dinner afterwards. Or should
we have services later so people can have a more leisurely dinner beforehand?
Based on our relative success at Heather Heights should we try to schedule
services at other assisted living facilities in town? Whatever we try will be
destined to fail, unless you, the members of BHBI, resolve to attend Friday
night services. Think about it. This is an important part of our tradition.
Get the Friday night habit! The one kind of event
we can pretty much guarantee a crowd for is a holiday party. The next such
event will be the Chanukah party, celebrated jointly with Beth Am on Sunday
December 5th at BHBI. I hope to see you there. I also hope to see
you at a Friday night service soon. B’shalom, Leon Metlay |
