August President’s Message

Our farewell dinner for Rabbi Goldberg was a great success with roughly 50 people from BHBI, Temple Beth Am, and Temple Beth David attending.  Remarks of appreciation were made by Leon Metlay and Aaron Marsh who presented the Rabbi, on behalf of BHBI and TBA, with a parting gift of a fine-art illustrated Hagaddah with a commemorative plaque.  The Rabbi reciprocated with words of thanks and appreciation for the time he has spent in Rochester in the service of all our congregations.  I would like to thank Paula Bobb and Nina Klionsky for their great help in preparing the dinner, and Judith Mercer, Ira Cohen, Stan Schaffer, Jeff Nidetz and others (forgive me if I don’t remember everyone’s name) who helped serve, as well as those who helped to clean up.

Our next upcoming event will be our annual joint picnic with Temple Beth Am, which will take place Friday, August 12, at 5:30 pm at Beth Am, to be followed by Shabbat evening service.

This month we will also start a new tradition, with a joint BHBI, Temple Beth Am and Temple Beth David trip to the Seneca Park Zoo, in honor of the Jewish New Year for Animals, which takes place on the first of Elul.  We will meet at the zoo on Sunday, August 28, at 11 am.  A kosher deli lunch will be provided – send in your reservation form and payment, details to be found elsewhere in this Bulletin.  Did you know that Jewish law places great emphasis on the kind treatment of animals?  For example, you are required to let your animals rest on Shabbat (you cannot ask Fido to fetch your Saturday morning paper!), and you are obligated to feed your animals before you eat yourself.  If you have not been to the Seneca Park Zoo lately, this is a wonderful opportunity to meet with friends and explore our city’s steadily expanding zoo.

It is with sadness that our congregation notes the passing of Alan Fishman, husband of Emily Fishman, and Sheila Kleinstein, sister of Sherris and Sherman Kleinstein.  May their memories be a blessing to their loved ones.  On a happier note, Mrs. Esther Solomon will be celebrating her 105th birthday on August 7th. See page 3 for more info.

See you in shul,

Steve Teitel
