October President’s Message

Friends,

As I write this message to you, the High Holy Days are about to commence.  We began our penitential season with Selichot Service on Saturday, September 25, jointly with Temple Beth Am at Beth Am.  A nice crowed turned out to watch the Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep movie, Defending Your Life, a comic yet thoughtful movie about what lies in store after death.  While not an overtly “Jewish” movie, it did have several clear points of contact with Jewish tradition.  The premise of the movie is that when one dies, one’s life is judged.  If one is found to have made insufficient progress in overcoming ones fears, then one gets set back to earth to live another life in a new reincarnation; only when one has advanced sufficiently in their life on earth does one get forwarded to the next stage of the universe.  While many of you may not be aware of it, this parallels the Jewish mystical notion of gilgul.   This kabbalistic notion holds that one’s soul may be reincarnated through many different lifetimes as it purifies and perfects itself.  Only when a soul has succeeded to carry out its unique mission does it advance to the next stage of Olam Ha’Ba.  For those of you less mystically inclined, there was another clear point of Jewish contact.  While waiting in “Judgment City” for their fate to be decided, the recently departed get to enjoy many benefits and pleasures, in particular, the food is always delicious and one gets to eat as much as one wants with no adverse effects! Thanks to Leon Metlay and Aaron Marsh for arranging and leading the Selichot service.

The following Sunday was our pre-holiday set up and clean up, when we changed the sanctuary furnishing for the High Holy Days, put up our new lawn sign to advertise the times of our services, and did some yard work to trim the hedges, pluck the weeds, and hack back the ivy.  Thanks to Paula Bobb, Ira Cohen, Helen Gulack, Aline Honickman, Nina Klionsky, Leon Metlay, Stan Schaffer and Esther Vogelstein who turned out to help.  A special thanks to Helen for the very attractive new plantings by both our East Avenue sign and the sign by our main entrance – please take a moment to admire them when you come for holiday services.

By the time this message reaches you, Rosh Hashanah will be over, and Yom Kippur will be soon approaching.  In this time of reflection I ask you to consider what your association with BHBI means to you, and how you can make that association more satisfying.  For myself, I find that the more I contribute, the greater are the rewards I reap.  If you have any concerns or suggestions to make your participation in BHBI more rewarding, I am always available to listen.  Please give generously to our High Holiday Appeal.

I wish you a hatimah tovah, and a joyful new year,

See you in shul,

Steve Teitel

When you see them, please wish a welcome to BHBI’s newest members:
