President’s Message Friends, It was a long stretch,
but the Holidays are finally over!
We had a very nice crowd participating for all our High Holiday
Services. Thanks to George
Kornfeld, who once again served as our Cantor, and to Ira Cohen and Leon
Metlay who led other portions of the various services. Thanks to all who helped with the
organization or served as ushers or page announcers, and a special thanks to
the Honickman family for sponsoring the Break Fast at the conclusion of Yom
Kippur. Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret
and Simchat Torah were a joint affair, with hosting and participation from
all the small Conservative shuls, BHBI, Beth Am and Beth David. Simchat Torah evening and morning at
BHBI were an especially joyful and entertaining celebration, with the usual
songs and joking and even a raven that came to visit. Thanks to the participants from all
of the congregations, particularly those who organized the schedule and led
the services. For Shmini
Atzeret, Simchat Torah, and the following Shabbat we enjoyed wonderful and
tasty kiddushim, sponsored by Janet Grable. Thank you, Janet!
And thanks to Judith Mercer and Esther Vogelstein who helped Janet
prepare and cook. Some of you have asked
me about the Talmud passages I cited during my Yom Kippur address to the
Congregation. For those
interested, these passages, which refer to the less than cordial relations
that sometimes existed between the Houses of Hillel and Shammai, are: Talmud
Bavli - Sanhedrin 88b, Shabbat 17a, and Eruvin 13b; and Talmud Yerushalami -
Beitzah 2:4 and Shabbat 1:4. For
the Yerushalami, I used the Neusner translation to English. It is with sadness that
I inform you of the passing of long time members Ben Hobel and Tamar
Rogachefsky. May their memories be a blessing to their loved ones. See you in shul, Steve Teitel |

EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY
Last year on November 7th, Rochester celebrated the
first Global Day of Jewish Learning - honoring the completion of Rabbi Adin
Steinsaltz’s monumental translation on the Talmud – in concert with
Jewish communities worldwide. We were delighted when, in partnership
with Rochester's Jewish Community Center, hundreds of adult learners
turned out at the center to choose from over 40 workshops; additionally there
were tracks for educators and teens.
The mission of "Global
Day" is to bring the Jewish people together once a year to celebrate
our foundational Jewish texts through community based learning. This year,
we honor the spirit of the "Global Day" with a very special
"Global Evening of Jewish Learning." We hope all who are interested
will join us for, "Can You Hear Me?" The Wisdom of the
Sh'ma."
The Sh'ma is a section of verses that is commanded
to be recited twice a day, as it is stated explicitly in the Torah, "speak
of them... when you retire and when you arise" (Deuteronomy 6:5-9).
We are fortunate to present Cantor Ellen
Dreskin to address this intriguing topic. Her discussion of the sh'ma will be
followed by breakout sessions with three esteemed rabbis from our own
community.
The details of "The Global Evening"
are as follows. There is no cost to attend but RSVP is requested by Nov. 4th.
